Melissa Garretson Smith has served as the Executive Director of the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority (CFIA) since September 2010. The CFIA is a small state agency that provides grant funding to county government to maintain, repair and/or modify their courthouse facilities. Prior to working in state government, Melissa spent 12 years in the non-profit world. Most recently, she served as the Executive Director for the WV Sheriffs’ Association for eight years.
 
Melissa’s true passion is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She has been a certified Jazzercise instructor for over five years. Her classes are offered in Charleston, but Jazzercise is an international company.  
 
Melissa graduated summa cum laude from Concord College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Travel Industry Management and earned her Master of Science degree from West Virginia University in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management with an emphasis in Community Wellness.
 
Although she is proud of her educational and professional achievements, one of her most important goals in life is to be a good mother. Melissa has a daughter and a son. She resides in Cross Lanes with her husband, Tony, and their children.
