Even with a recent rough stretch, the state Investment Management Board continues to outperform most other public sector investment organizations, which executive director Craig Slaughter credits to the board’s ability to operate independently.

“We have a lot of independence that a lot of our peer agencies don’t have,” he told the House Committee on Pensions and Retirement Tuesday. “What it has allowed us to do is depoliticize the investment environment.”
